Doctrinal Mastery: Assessment 1 Review
1 Nephi 3:7 through Mosiah 18:8–10
This doctrinal mastery assessment review is designed as a learning experience to help students review the 12 doctrinal mastery passages found in 1 Nephi through Mosiah. It will allow them to demonstrate understanding and application of the truths in these passages. It is also designed to help prepare students for the upcoming assessment (“Doctrinal Mastery: Assessment 1”).
This review lesson is intended to be a virtual or in-person learning experience.
Use this review and administer the doctrinal mastery assessment anytime after all doctrinal mastery passages from 1 Nephi through Mosiah have been taught. Allow enough time between this review and the assessment for students to study the passages they don’t know well. It may be necessary to adjust the teaching schedule in order to accomplish this so the assessment can be administered before the end of the first half of the course.
Possible Learning Activities
Consider the needs of students and select the portions of this review that will best help them prepare for “Doctrinal Mastery: Assessment 1.” Throughout this review, invite students to note the passages that they do not know well and to make plans to study and review those passages in preparation for the assessment.
The following quizzes in review activities 1 and 2 are meant to help students review the doctrinal mastery references and key scripture phrases. Different activities could be used to engage students in the review process. Some ideas can be found on the Doctrinal Mastery mobile app.
Review Activity 1: Know the scripture references and key scripture phrases
Help students review and be prepared to match the following scripture references to the key scripture phrases. Encourage students to note the passages they may not yet know so they can continue to study them before taking the assessment.
One way to engage students in this review is to write each of the 12 scripture references on separate pieces of paper and write each of the 12 key scripture phrases on separate pieces of paper. Then stick all 24 pieces of paper to the wall in random spots around the room with the writing facing the wall so that students cannot see what is on the papers.
Invite a student to choose any piece of paper, turn it over, and read it. Invite all the students to write down what they think the matching reference or key scripture phrase is. Then invite the same student to turn over one more piece of paper to see if the papers are a match. If they match, leave them off the wall. If they do not match, have the student stick them to the wall again so that students cannot read them. Then invite another student to choose the next two papers. Continue this process until all the matches have been discovered and are off the wall.

Review Activity 2: Know the scripture references and key scripture phrases
Help students review the key scripture phrases in an engaging way. Encourage them to note those they may not yet know so they can continue to study them before taking the assessment.
One way to do this is to assign different key scripture phrases to different students. Invite each student to select three words from their key scripture phrase that they would like to leave blank. Then invite students to take turns standing and reading their phrase with the blanks they chose while the class attempts to write down the words that go in the blanks.
You might choose to review all 12 key scripture phrases in this way rather than only the following suggested phrases.
Answer key: (1) choose; life; captivity; (2) service; beings; God; (3) natural; saint; atonement; (4) God; believe; wisdom; (5) baptized; witness; covenant
Fill in the blank with the missing word or words from the key scripture phrases.

Review Activity 3: Apply the doctrine
The following activity will help students demonstrate understanding of the truths in doctrinal mastery passages by allowing them to explain how the passages could be applied in real-life situations. Students can use their scriptures to help them choose one or more doctrinal mastery passages that they feel could help the person described in each scenario. Invite them to explain how the truths from the passage(s) could help the person. Multiple doctrinal mastery passages could be applied to each scenario.

A young man has an important decision to make that could greatly impact his future. He is nervous and unsure what choice to make.

A young woman’s parents are not supportive of her decision to keep the commandments of God. She wants to be obedient, but it seems too hard in her circumstances.

One of your friends is mocked by his classmates for living the gospel of Jesus Christ. You want to reassure him that it is worth it to remain faithful to his covenants.
After students finish discussing the three previous scenarios, consider inviting them to work with a partner to create additional scenarios. Each student could select a doctrinal mastery passage for their partner. Then, using the passage their partner selected for them, students could think of and share a scenario when that passage could help someone.
Review Activity 4: Use the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge
Consider using the following scenario to help students review the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge. It may be effective for students to role-play this activity in groups of three, with each student explaining a different principle of acquiring spiritual knowledge.
You have a friend who is questioning why some things she has recently been taught in school seem to contradict what God has taught through the scriptures and modern prophets.
Teach your friend about the following three principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge and how she could use them to turn to Heavenly Father for help with her concerns.

Examine concepts and questions with an eternal perspective

Seek further understanding through divinely appointed sources
Consider inviting students to work in groups of three, with each student writing his or her answer to one of the following questions on a piece of paper.
Next, invite students to exchange papers and to write on the other student’s paper what they like about that student’s answer. Then ask them to exchange their papers a second time so they will have responded to both members of their group. Finally, invite them to get their own paper back and read the responses of their group members.

Review Activity 5: Passages with special meaning in your life
Invite students to reflect on a doctrinal mastery passage that has impacted them during their study so far in the Book of Mormon. They might choose one that helped them feel the love of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Explain that they will have the opportunity to share the passage they chose as part of the assessment.

Apply the doctrine to real-life situations

Use one or more doctrinal mastery scripture passages to help someone who wants guidance for making important decisions in his or her life.

Choose one or more passages to help someone who feels that their circumstances make it difficult to keep the commandments of God.

Choose any of the doctrinal mastery passages and think of a situation where the truths taught in that passage could help a teenager in his or her life. If possible, think of real situations that you know of or that you have faced yourself.

Be prepared to share which of the doctrinal mastery passages has impacted you the most. What does that passage teach you about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ?
Principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge
Review paragraphs 5–12 in the “Acquiring Spiritual Knowledge” section of the Doctrinal Mastery Core Document (2023). Ponder how you could use principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge to help someone overcome a challenge or concern he or she is facing.
