Joseph Smith’s First Vision
An answer to a humble prayer
In the place where Joseph Smith’s family lived, there were many churches that taught about Jesus Christ. They all taught different things about Him. Joseph wasn’t sure who was right. He knew that he needed the Savior, but he didn’t know which church to join.
Joseph Smith—History 1:5–6; Saints, 1:9
Joseph thought about this for a long time. He wanted to be forgiven of his sins. He visited many churches, but he still felt confused.
Joseph Smith—History 1:8–10; Saints, 1:9–12
One day, Joseph read James 1:5 in the Bible. It said if we need wisdom, we can ask God. Joseph knew in his heart that this was what he needed to do.
On the morning of a beautiful spring day in 1820, Joseph went into the woods near his home. He wanted to be in a place where he could be alone to pray to Heavenly Father.
Joseph knelt and started to pray. As he did, he felt an evil power take hold of him. He felt darkness all around him. It seemed like someone was trying to stop him from speaking to God. Joseph used all his strength to ask God to save him.
Suddenly, Joseph saw a beautiful bright light coming down from heaven. The darkness left, and he felt peace. In the light, Joseph saw Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ standing in the air. Heavenly Father said Joseph’s name. Then He pointed to Jesus and said, “This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!”
Jesus told Joseph that his sins were forgiven. Joseph asked Jesus which church he should join. Jesus said that he should join none of them.
Joseph Smith—History 1:18–19; Saints, 1:16
Jesus said that important truths about His gospel had been lost. He said He would send angels to teach these truths to Joseph, to share with the world.
Saints, 1:16–17
After the vision ended, Joseph was filled with love and joy. He wasn’t confused anymore. He knew that God loved him. Even though some people hated him for saying that he had seen Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, Joseph knew it was true.
