1832年，約瑟·斯密和耶穌基督後期聖徒教會的一些早期領袖受到指示要開辦一所學校。神要他們學習、成長、並做好領導他人的準備。這群成員沒有大學學位，甚至沒有受過很多教育。他們也沒有很多的錢或資源。在經文中，神教導他們學習的模式：

「既然不是所有的人都有信心，你們就要勤奮尋求並互相教導智慧的言語；是的，你們要從最好的書中尋求智慧的言語，藉著研讀也藉著信心尋求學識」（教義和聖約88：118）。

神教導我們需要藉著研讀來學習，也需要藉著信心來學習。我們盡最大的努力，並祈求神派遣祂的聖靈來打開我們的心思意念來學習。聖靈會給我們更多的理解力，超出單靠我們自己所能有的理解力。有出色的教師或很棒的教科書會有所幫助，但即使我們沒有這些東西，神也可以教導我們。當我們藉著研讀和信心來學習時，神可以幫助我們學到比我們想像的更多的東西。
