Doctrinal Mastery: Assessment Review 1
Matthew 5:14–16 through John 17:3
This doctrinal mastery assessment review is designed as a learning experience to help students review the 11 doctrinal mastery passages found in Matthew, Luke, and John. It will also help prepare students for the upcoming assessment (“Doctrinal Mastery: Assessment 1”) and allow them to demonstrate understanding and application of these passages.
This review lesson is intended to be used as an in-person or videoconference learning experience.
Use this review and administer the doctrinal mastery assessment anytime after all doctrinal mastery passages in Matthew, Luke, and John have been taught. It may be necessary to teach some of the doctrinal mastery lessons before they come up in the sequence of the scriptures so the assessment can be administered before the end of the semester.
Possible Learning Activities
The importance of doctrinal mastery
Consider the needs of students, and select the portions of this review that will best assist them in preparing for the first doctrinal mastery assessment (“Doctrinal Mastery: Assessment 1”). Invite students throughout this review to note the passages that they do not know as well and to make plans to study and review these passages in preparation for the assessment.
Ask the following question, and consider writing on the board one or two of the situations that students share or simply inviting students to remember the situations. The third review activity provides an opportunity to use these situations.

What are some situations when knowing where to find doctrinal mastery passages could help you?
The quizzes in review activities 1 and 2 below are suggestions to help students review the references and key scripture phrases. Different activities could be used to accomplish this according to students’ needs.
Review activity 1: Know the scripture references and key scripture phrases
Display the following quiz, or provide copies of it to students.
A different way to use the following activity is to write the 11 scripture references on the board. Then read each key scripture phrase aloud to see if students can locate the correct passage within 15 seconds (or a different given amount of time). When time runs out, invite students to state the reference.
As another method to help the students be more active, write the 11 scripture references on the board. Print and tape each of the key scripture phrases in different locations around the room. Invite students to walk around the room, find all 11 phrases, and see if they can identify which reference pertains to each phrase as they find them.

Review activity 2: Know the scripture references and key scripture phrases
Display the following quiz, or provide copies of it to students.
Consider writing on the board all 15 of the correct answers to the following five questions in random order. Invite students to cut a piece of paper into 15 small pieces and write one correct answer on each small piece. Then provide students the following five questions as a handout, and invite them to try to place the 15 pieces of paper in the correct blanks to finish each phrase.

Review activity 3: Apply the doctrine
The following activity will help students demonstrate understanding of doctrinal mastery passages by allowing them to explain how they could be applied in real-life situations. Allow students to use their scriptures to help them choose one or more doctrinal mastery passages that they feel could help the person described in the activity. Invite them to explain how the passage they chose could help the person. Multiple doctrinal mastery verses could be applied to each scenario.
This activity could be done in groups, individually, as a class, or it could be done using a combination of all three. Rather than using the following suggested scenarios, consider inviting students to use the scenarios they shared at the beginning of class.

Someone learning about the Church wants to know if he really needs to be baptized if he has already accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior.

You have a friend who is questioning if Heavenly Father loves her.

Your sister wonders how she can become a better disciple of Jesus Christ.
Review activity 4: Use the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge
Consider using the following scenario to help students review the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge. It may be effective for students to do this activity in pairs or small groups.
Your friend is struggling to gain a personal testimony that the doctrine taught in the Church is from God.
Teach your friend about the following three principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge and how he could use them to access Heavenly Father’s help with his concern:
Act in faith.
Examine concepts and questions with an eternal perspective.
Seek further understanding through divinely appointed sources.

Invite students to reflect on which doctrinal mastery passage has impacted them the most and helped increase their understanding of or love for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Explain that they will have the opportunity to share about this passage and what it teaches about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ as part of the assessment.
