Apply Doctrinal Mastery Passages

One of the purposes of doctrinal mastery is to help you learn how to apply the doctrine taught in the doctrinal mastery passages to real-life situations. This lesson will give you opportunities to practice applying some of the passages you have studied this year.

Doctrine for real life

Review the four doctrinal mastery passages in the following chart. As you read the scenarios below, determine which doctrinal mastery passage might help in each scenario.

1. Carlos has a friend of another Christian faith who expresses his belief that Jesus Christ is a spirit and that He does not have a physical body.

2. Liz sees herself as inclusive, including accepting any behavior as long as it is sincere. This has led her to question Heavenly Father’s doctrine of marriage and family. Because of her questions, Liz has recently stopped attending church and living other commandments.

3. Maria wonders how she can make taking the sacrament a more meaningful experience.

4. Frank has stopped paying attention in his seminary class and Sunday School meetings because he feels he already knows enough about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

Select one of the scenarios, and think about the doctrinal mastery passage you matched with it.

1. List which scenario you chose and the doctrinal mastery passage that you feel best addresses the situation. Then, answer the following questions in your study journal.

• How does the doctrinal mastery passage you chose apply to this scenario?

• What can this passage help the person in the scenario understand about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and Their desires for us?

• What actions might you suggest this person take in order to apply the truths in the passage you chose? Why?

Applying doctrinal mastery passages to personal circumstances

2. Complete the following activity:

In your study journal, draw a stick figure of a teenager, and write down their age, gender, and family situation. This person could be either real or imagined. Include a few specific questions, problems, or challenges this person is currently facing.

Review the doctrinal mastery passages below (and any others of your choice) and determine which passages might be helpful in the scenario.

Write a brief note to the teenager in the scenario. Include the following:

• The doctrinal mastery passage you feel would best help them understand Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ’s desires for them and why.

• A personal experience, scripture story, or example from the Savior’s life that relates to what is taught in the passage and might encourage this person.

• Actions they might take to apply the truths in the doctrinal mastery passage you suggested. (For example, for Luke 22:19–20 you could include advice about inviting the influence of the Holy Ghost and things to remember about the Savior during the sacrament, or for John 7:17 you could suggest talks they could read to better understand Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.)

• Your own testimony of Jesus Christ and the truths taught in the passage you selected.

If you wrote the note to a real person, consider giving it to them or talking with them about your note.
