예수님께서 권능을 보여 주신 방법 중 하나는 기적적인 치유를 통해서인데, 과부의 아들을 죽음으로부터 살리신 것이 그 한 예이다. 이 과는 우리 시대에 여러분의 삶에서 기적을 행하시는 예수 그리스도의 권능을 믿는 신앙을 강화하기 위해 마련되었다.

경전에 기록된 기적들 가운데 어떤 기적들을 좋아하는가? 그 이유는 무엇인가?
이들 기적에서 예수 그리스도에 관해 무엇을 배우는가?
구주께서는 지상 생애 동안 많은 기적을 행하셨다. 한 주 동안 이 과에 나오는 이런 기적들을 공부하면서 다음 질문에 어떻게 답할지 깊이 생각해 본다.

예수 그리스도를 더 잘 알게 되는 데 도움이 될 수 있는 경전 공부 기법의 하나는 그분께서 무엇을 하시는지를 넘어 그분의 행동이 그분의 성품에 대해 드러내는 바가 무엇인지를 기도하는 마음으로 깊이 생각해 보는 것이다. 읽으면서 “구주께서 행하시는 것과 말씀하시는 것으로부터 나는 구주의 동기와 우선순위, 성품에 관해 무엇을 배우는가?”와 같은 질문을 해 보도록 한다.

As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we believe in a very personal relationship with the Savior. In reading the New Testament and the Book of Mormon I have often wondered what it must have been like to feel the Saviors touch and receive healing through his virtue. This image depicts the story found in Matthew 8 of the New Testament. The leper who approached Jesus had faith that, if willing, he could make him clean. With the simple words, “be thou clean” a life was brought from despair to hope. What must that moment have been like? The newly cleansed man, gazing into the face of the Savior of the world.

마태복음 8:1~4 ; 마가복음 1:40~42예수께서 나병환자를 고치시다나병은 고통스럽고 전염성이 있으며 때로는 치명적인 질병이었기 때문에 나병환자는 사회로부터 소외되었을 것이다. 대부분의 사람들이 나병환자에게 가까이 가거나 접촉하는 것을 피했을 것이다.
마태복음 8:5~8, 13예수께서 백부장의 종을 고치시다백부장은 로마 군대에서 약 100명의 군인을 거느리는 지휘관이었다. 예수님 시대의 많은 유대인들은 로마 군인들을 싫어했는데, 종교적인 차이와 함께 그들이 자신들을 정복한 국가를 대표했기 때문이었다.

Many miracles happen every day in the work of our Church and in the lives of our members. Many of you have witnessed miracles, perhaps more than you realize.

구주께서 오늘날에도 여전히 기적을 행하시는지 궁금했던 적이 있는가? 많은 사람들이 홍해가 갈라지거나 죽은 사람을 살리는 것과 같은, 경전에 기록된 극적인 기적을 경험하지는 못하지만, 오늘날에도 여전히 기적이 일어나고 있다는 것을 기억하는 것이 중요하다. 구주께서는 이렇게 선언하셨다. “나는 … 기적의 하나님이니, 내가 어제나 오늘이나, 영원을 두고 동일함[을] … 세상에 보일 것임이니라.” ( 니파이후서 27:23)

Miracles are not available for the asking. … The will of the Lord is always paramount. The priesthood of the Lord cannot be used to work a miracle contrary to the will of the Lord. We must also remember that even when a miracle is to occur, it will not occur on our desired schedule. The revelations teach that miraculous experiences occur “in his own time, and in his own way” ( D&C 88:68).

We came to this earth that we might have a body and present it pure before God in the celestial kingdom. The great principle of happiness consists in having a body. The devil has no body, and herein is his punishment. Our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, will perform some of His mightiest works between now and when He comes again. We will see miraculous indications that God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, preside over this Church in majesty and glory.
