1 Corinthians 14–16

Overview

As part of his message concluding his first epistle to the Corinthians, Paul taught many truths about the Resurrection. He testified of the Savior’s victory over death, the reality of the Resurrection for all of Heavenly Father’s children, and the degrees of glory that resurrected bodies will obtain. He also taught about the ordinance of baptisms for the dead.

Prepare to Teach

The following information provides teachers with ideas of what may need to be prepared in advance for each lesson.

1 Corinthians 15:13–28

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students feel greater love and appreciation for Jesus Christ because of His victory over death.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Invite students to bring a photo of someone they look forward to seeing in the Resurrection. If the photos are digital, students could take turns sharing their screens and describing the people in their photos to the class.

Doctrinal Mastery: 1 Corinthians 15:20–22

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students memorize the doctrinal mastery reference and key scripture phrase for 1 Corinthians 15:20–22, explain the doctrine of the Resurrection, and apply principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge in a real-life situation.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to ponder experiences they know of when someone’s loved one passed away. Ask them to come prepared to discuss the challenges in these experiences and how faith in Jesus Christ can help those facing these challenges.

1 Corinthians 15:29

Lesson purpose: This lesson is intended to help students desire and plan to participate more meaningfully in family history and temple work.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to come prepared to share their family tree or to tell a story about an ancestor who did not have the gospel or access to ordinances of salvation and exaltation.

  • Images: Consider preparing various sets of pictures to use at the beginning of the lesson.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: After students have studied about baptisms for the dead, consider dividing them into pairs or small groups in breakout rooms to allow them to practice sharing (or role-playing) how they would explain this doctrine to someone unfamiliar with it.

1 Corinthians 15:32–54

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students strive to be worthy of a celestial resurrection through Jesus Christ.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to read Alma 40:23 to see what all resurrected bodies have in common, then to read 1 Corinthians 15:40–42 to see differences that will exist among resurrected beings.

  • Treat: Bring a small treat for each student who wears a certain color of clothing to class.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider inviting some students to hold the picture of their drawing of the plan of salvation in front of their camera as they explain the plan to the class.

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students memorize the doctrinal mastery reference and key scripture phrase for 1 Corinthians 15:40–42, explain the doctrine, and apply principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge in real-life situations.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to read 1 Corinthians 15:40–42 and to come to class prepared to share a real-life scenario where the doctrine taught in this passage would be helpful.
