Doctrinal Mastery: Luke 24:36–39

“A Spirit Hath Not Flesh and Bones, as Ye See Me Have”

the resurrected Jesus Christ standing at the entrance to the Garden Tomb

In your study of Luke 24:1–9, 36–48, you learned about the Savior’s Resurrection. Using the doctrinal mastery passage Luke 24:36–39, this lesson will help you increase your mastery of the doctrine of resurrection by memorizing the reference and key scripture phrase, explaining the doctrine, and applying principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge in a real-life situation.

Time management. Doctrinal mastery review activities should be short and effective. Be disciplined as you administer these review activities so that they do not take too much time.

Student preparation: Invite students to reflect on what they learned and felt as they studied the Savior’s Resurrection in Luke 24:1–9, 36–48.

Possible Learning Activities

This doctrinal mastery passage lesson is designed to be taught after the lesson Luke 24:1–12, 36–48, which is the contextual lesson for the doctrinal mastery passage Luke 24:36–39. If this doctrinal mastery passage lesson needs to be moved to a different week, be sure to teach the corresponding contextual lesson during that week as well.

Memorize and explain

Recall that after the Savior’s suffering in Gethsemane and death on the cross, His body was taken down and laid in a tomb. Three days later, Jesus Christ was resurrected. Read the doctrinal mastery passage Luke 24:36–39 and underline important words or phrases the Savior taught His disciples after His Resurrection.

Imagine you are asked to respond to the following prompt for the “Questions and Answers” section of the For the Strength of Youth magazine. Consider what you might share in just 2–3 sentences.

If students are unfamiliar with the “Questions and Answers” section of the For the Strength of Youth magazine, consider sharing examples from recent editions.

  • What is so special about the Resurrection of Jesus Christ?

Provide an opportunity for students to memorize the reference for the doctrinal mastery passage Luke 24:36–39 and its accompanying key scripture phrase. Below is one example of how to do this.

To practice memorizing this reference and key scripture phrase, divide a page in your study journal into four sections. Write the reference and one of the phrases (as shown below) in each section. Consider drawing a simple corresponding picture or icon to represent each of the four parts of the scripture reference and key phrase. Practice reciting each of these until you can recite it all without looking.

  • Luke 24:36–39

  • For a spirit

  • hath not flesh and bones,

  • as ye see me have

Practice application

Help students review the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge by completing the activity below in about 3–5 minutes. Consider asking them to report if they were able to list the three principles from memory, and invite those willing to share how these principles have been used, or could be used, in their lives.

Briefly review paragraphs 5–12 in the “Acquiring Spiritual Knowledge” section of the Doctrinal Mastery Core Document (2022). One way to do this might be to see if you can list all three principles from memory. Then, in your study journal, record how you have used, or could use, these principles in your life.

Now practice using the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge and the doctrine taught in Luke 24:36–39 by reading the scenario below and answering the questions that follow.

Consider adapting the following scenario to make it relevant for students.

One of your close friends, Jinyoon, has agreed to take the missionary lessons in your home. Jinyoon and his family recently moved to your town, and he has no previous understanding of or knowledge about Jesus Christ. When taught the plan of salvation and the role of Jesus Christ, Jinyoon seems uncomfortable but doesn’t say anything. Later, after the missionaries leave, he shares with you that he doesn’t believe in the concept of resurrection and life after death.

The following questions are intended to allow students to practice using the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge on their own. Whether these questions are discussed as a class or in small groups, be sure to listen carefully to students to gauge their ability to use these principles on their own. If students need help, consider prompting them with questions like those under the headings of each principle listed below.

  • What might you do or say to help Jinyoon understand your desire to help him?

  • What questions might you ask to better understand what Jinyoon believes or where he is coming from?

  • How could you use each of the three principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge to help Jinyoon?

Act in faith

  • How might you act in faith in this situation?

  • What might you share with Jinyoon about acting in faith? Why is this an important step in finding answers to his questions?

Examine concepts and questions with an eternal perspective

  • What questions might you ask or eternal truths might you testify of to Jinyoon as you try to help him see his concern with an eternal perspective?

  • How might this help Jinyoon to begin to understand this from an eternal perspective?

  • What has helped you understand the Savior’s Resurrection and its role in the plan of salvation?

Seek further understanding through divinely appointed sources

  • What specific scriptures from Luke 24 might you use when responding to Jinyoon? What additional sources might you review before you respond? (Some of the materials you studied in the previous lesson on Luke 24 could help.)

  • Where else would you refer Jinyoon if he wanted to study more on his own?

After students have had time to apply the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge, invite them to reflect on how they feel they did. Consider asking students to share their experiences of applying these principles to their own lives. Invite them to share what these principles mean to them.
