Memorize References and Key Scripture Phrases

Family in New Zealand sitting in the living room reading scriptures together.

Have you ever wondered why it is important to memorize scriptures? Memorizing scriptures can help you receive inspiration, remember the Savior, and teach the gospel to others. This lesson is intended to help you memorize some of the scripture references and key scripture phrases of the doctrinal mastery passages in the New Testament.

Fostering a safe learning environment of acceptance and respect. When students know they are loved and accepted by their teacher and their classmates, they are more likely to come to class ready to learn and contribute to the learning experience. Look for ways to help students feel loved and to help them appropriately express love to each other.

Student preparation: Invite students to talk with a family member or friend about how memorizing scriptures has inspired that family member or friend or helped them come closer to the Savior.

Possible Learning Activities

Why memorize scriptures?

A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this review lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by the area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught while seminary is in session.

Imagine you are participating in a survey for the For the Strength of Youth magazine. How would you respond if you were asked the following question?

  • What are the top five reasons for memorizing scriptures?

Students could think about what they learned during the student preparation activity as they respond to the question.

There are many good reasons to memorize scriptures. Memorized scriptures can be like friends who can give us inspiration, comfort, and motivation in times of need (see Richard G. Scott, “The Power of Scripture,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2011, 6). Memorizing scriptures can help us “look unto [the Savior] in every thought” (Doctrine and Covenants 6:36). Memorizing scriptures can help us “obtain [God’s] word” so we can teach others (Doctrine and Covenants 11:21).

  • How could memorizing scriptures affect your relationship with Jesus Christ?

Option 1: Draw a picture

Invite a student to select a doctrinal mastery scripture passage without telling the other students what the passage is. The student will then sketch clues (without using numbers or letters) until another student identifies the correct scripture reference and key phrase. Students could work in pairs, in small groups, or as a class. After the exercise, students could discuss the following question as a class or in small groups.

  • How do you think a memorized scripture can be like a friend who can give you inspiration, comfort, and motivation in times of need?

Option 2: Write it out

Consider dividing students into small groups. Give each group a sheet of paper. Invite the members of the group to choose a doctrinal mastery passage. They could then take turns writing one word at a time of the passage’s scripture reference and key scripture phrase. After a group member writes a word, they then pass the paper to the next group member, who writes the next word, until the group has correctly written the entire reference and scripture phrase. Groups could repeat this activity and time themselves to see how much they improve. After the exercise, students could discuss the following question as a class or in small groups.

Option 3: Name the scripture reference

Divide the class into pairs or small groups. Invite one student to share how many words from a key scripture phrase they think they would need to guess the scripture reference. Another student then selects a key scripture phrase and reads aloud that number of words from the key scripture phrase. The first student then tries to identify the scripture reference. Students can repeat this exercise as many times as they like and change the number of words to be read from the key scripture phrase. After the exercise, students could discuss the following question as a class or in small groups.

  • How do you think memorizing scriptures can help you be prepared to share the gospel with others?
