Doctrinal Mastery Review 7
One of the purposes of doctrinal mastery is to help you learn how to apply doctrine taught in the scriptures to situations you or those around you may face. This lesson will give you opportunities to practice applying some of the doctrine you have studied this year to your life.
Student preparation: Invite students to select one doctrinal mastery passage they feel is difficult to apply to their lives and one they feel is easy to apply. Ask them to be prepared to explain why they chose each passage.
Possible Learning Activities
A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this review lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by the area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught while seminary is in session.
Begin by inviting students to share their thoughts from their student preparation. They could do this as a class or in pairs or small groups.
Helping others
To help students apply truths taught in one of the doctrinal mastery passages, consider using the following scenario or inviting students to think of their own.
Imagine that you minister to a family in your ward whose father recently lost his employment. This father is extremely discouraged and has stopped going to church, praying, and reading the scriptures. There are three children in this family: a 17-year-old young woman, a 15-year-old young man, and a 10-year-old girl. The 10-year-old and her mother attend church occasionally. The two teenagers used to attend frequently, but as their father’s unemployment has continued, they have stopped coming.
As you review the following list of doctrinal mastery passages, think about the emotions and challenges each person in this family might be facing. Think about which truths from these scriptures could be most helpful to each person and why.
Display the following chart so students can refer to it throughout the lesson. If helpful, add other doctrinal mastery passages that may be useful in the given situation.

Consider asking students to role-play a conversation between the ministering sister or brother and a member of the family. The student portraying the family member could express concerns about the situation, and the student portraying the ministering sister or brother could give suggestions based on the doctrinal mastery passages.

When have you or others taken those actions, and what happened as a result? What did you learn about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ from those experiences?

Further application
Choose one of the doctrinal mastery passages that you did not use in the previous activity. Think about a situation in which this passage could help someone find answers to a question or work through a challenge. Record your thoughts in your study journal.
Encourage students to share ideas of other situations where a person can benefit from applying truths taught in these doctrinal mastery passages. Consider testifying of the Savior’s ability to help them apply those truths in their lives.
