Matthew 19–20; Mark 10; Luke 18
Overview
Jesus Christ answered questions and taught truth about marriage and divorce. He lovingly invited a wealthy young man to sell his riches and follow Him. He also shared the parable of the laborers in the vineyard, which demonstrates the love and mercy that He and Heavenly Father have for all of us.
Prepare to Teach
The following information provides teachers with ideas of what may need to be prepared in advance for each lesson.
Matthew 19:1–12
Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students understand how Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ have provided a way for them to have a happy, eternal marriage in their future.
-
Student preparation: Invite students to think about what they can do now to prepare for a happy marriage. Encourage them to seek advice from someone they know who has a happy, righteous marriage.
-
Object: A bicycle wheel or other wheel with a central hub
-
Guest speaker: Consider inviting a married couple from a local ward, branch, stake, or district to attend class and explain the happiness that marriage brings them and how the Savior has helped them in their marriage. Be sure to obtain approval from the local priesthood leader and S&I coordinator before inviting them.

-
Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider using an online survey tool for students to anonymously express their feelings about marriage toward the beginning of the lesson.
Matthew 19:16–30; Mark 10:17–31
Lesson purpose: This lesson will encourage students to learn from the Savior what He would have them do as they seek to better follow Him.
-
Student preparation: Invite students to recall a time when they were grateful to have been corrected by someone. How can helping us see where we can improve be a sign of love?
-
Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider using the idea in the “Supplemental Learning Activities” section of the teacher manual entitled “To receive eternal life, we must be willing to give up whatever the Lord requires of us.” It includes examples of those who accepted the Savior’s invitation to make changes even at great sacrifice.
Matthew 20:1–16
Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students feel hope for receiving the blessings that Jesus Christ offers through His Atonement.
-
Student preparation: Invite students to create a list of blessings they received from the Lord because they have been taught the gospel when they are young. Alternatively, they could create a list of opportunities people might miss if they are not taught the gospel until later in life. Ask students to think about what they can learn from the list they made.
