Matthew 18; Luke 10

Overview

Jesus Christ taught that He and our Heavenly Father have love and concern for everyone. He taught two parables that can help us understand Their love and learn to treat others as They would. The parable of the unmerciful servant reminds us to be merciful to others, just as God is merciful to us. The parable of the good Samaritan can help us to follow the Savior’s example of loving one’s neighbor. He also taught both Martha and Mary about the importance of centering our lives on Him.

Prepare to Teach

The following information provides teachers with ideas of what may need to be prepared in advance for each lesson.

Matthew 18:11–14

Lesson purpose: This lesson is meant to help you feel that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are compassionate and desire to save every lost soul.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: To begin the lesson, consider using an online survey tool to invite students to respond to the question about how Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ feel toward those who have sinned.

Matthew 18:21–35

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students become more like Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ as they make efforts to forgive others.

  • Student preparation: In a doctrinal mastery passage the Lord states, “Of you it is required to forgive all men” (Doctrine and Covenants 64:10). Invite students to ponder why Jesus Christ commands us to forgive one another. It may also be beneficial to invite students to read Doctrine and Covenants 64:9–11 and to reflect on the Lord’s message in those verses.

  • Video: “Our Path of Duty” (11:10; watch from time code 2:16 to 3:25)

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: To begin the lesson, consider displaying the following scripture for students to ponder: “I, the Lord, will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive all men” (Doctrine and Covenants 64:10). After students have had time to ponder, invite them to share why this commandment is a blessing in our lives. Ask them also to share why it can sometimes be difficult to keep.

Luke 10:25–37

Lesson purpose: This lesson is intended to help students follow the Savior’s example of loving one’s neighbor.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to read Luke 10:30–35, looking for where they see Jesus Christ in this parable. Ask them to also look for where they see themselves in the parable.

  • Video: “Parable of the Good Samaritan” (5:11)

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: During the portion of the lesson in which students discuss the questions related to loving our neighbor in different settings, consider using breakout rooms. Assign each group one of the settings listed in the lesson, and give the groups time to discuss the three questions as they think about the setting they were assigned.

Luke 10:38–42

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students identify choices and activities that help them make Jesus Christ the center of their lives.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to make a list of activities they did in a single day prior to this lesson and to bring their list to class.

  • Object lesson materials: A container and more rocks of various sizes than can fit in it.

Doctrinal Mastery Review 6

Lesson purpose: Give students opportunities to deepen their understanding of and explain truths about one or more of the doctrinal mastery scripture passages from the New Testament.

Note: A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this review lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by the area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught while seminary is in session.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to identify a scripture study skill or strategy that works well for them and think about why this skill or strategy is useful to them.

  • Handout: Prepare to display the list of the doctrinal mastery scripture passages and their associated key scripture phrases or provide it to students as a handout.

  • Materials: Make sure students have writing utensils and study journals or pieces of paper to use in the lesson activities.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Students could optionally create a digital “Line upon Line” page or visual representation of a doctrinal mastery scripture passage. Students could then share their screen to show and explain their creation to the class.
