Introduction

Having a loved one incarcerated can be a fearful experience. You may feel alone, struggle to survive financially, or worry about the future (see Isaiah 41:10). Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ know your needs and want to comfort you. One of the ways God sends help is through others. You may be hurt and ashamed, and you may want to isolate yourself from others. However, allowing others to provide help is a way to show God that you are grateful for His love. Surround yourself with people you trust and experts who can help.

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, taught: “God is anxiously waiting for the chance to answer your prayers and fulfill your dreams, just as He always has. But He can’t if you don’t pray, and He can’t if you don’t dream. In short, He can’t if you don’t believe” (“Terror, Triumph, and a Wedding Feast” [Brigham Young University devotional, Sept. 12, 2004], 3, speeches.byu.edu).

Sister Reyna I. Aburto, a leader in the Church’s women’s organization, gave additional encouragement as she taught: “If you feel that you cannot take one more step, please ask for help. My plea to you is don’t give up. There is hope. There is healing. There is joy. There is love surrounding you. Please turn to the Lord’s redeeming grace and turn to the people around you. Don’t give up. Please don’t give up” (in “Sister to Sister Conversation” [Brigham Young University Women’s Conference, May 1, 2020], ChurchofJesusChrist.org).
