How Can Children Maintain a Relationship with an Incarcerated Parent?

Every situation is different, and each family must decide for themselves. In some situations of abuse or other crimes, it may not be appropriate for a parent to maintain a relationship with her or his children. Parents should prayerfully consider the best approach for their family as they seek advice from trusted friends, Church leaders, and family support professionals. If the children are old enough, their feelings should be considered. Steps for strengthening a damaged relationship can be taken, but the timing of each step should be considered. Patience is a virtue that will bless the relationship. If it is appropriate to maintain and improve the relationship, trusted adults can help children make a plan for moving forward.
