What is my initial understanding or ability? (Assessment)

Write a question that helps increase a learner’s capacity to see the relevance of temple worship.

What is it and why is it important? (Define):

Asking questions that help learners see the relevance of a gospel principle can help them see why the truths they are learning matter to them. As you prepare lessons, consider the needs of those you teach and think about how the truths in the scriptures could be meaningful and useful in their circumstances. One way you can help learners see the relevance of the truths they are discovering is by asking questions like these:

  • How can this help you with something you are experiencing now?

  • Why is it important for you to know this?

  • What difference can this make in your life?

(Teaching in the Savior’s Way [2016], 23).

Who or what provides a good illustration of this? (Model):

As Sister Lufkin prepares a learning experience for the principle of forgiveness, she thinks about how the principle can be useful to her student’s circumstances and prepares the following question:

“How can asking for or receiving forgiveness help you with something you are experiencing today?”

How can I practice using this skill or applying this principle? (Practice)

Write a question that increases a learner’s capacity to see relevance with the following principles:

  • Listening to and following the promptings of the Holy Ghost

  • Trusting in the Lord

  • Daily prayer

Ponder or discuss:

What are the benefits that you see in the learner’s experience as you work on making the principles relevant to them?

How and when will I incorporate this?

As you prepare for upcoming lessons, find ways you can ask questions that help learners see relevance.
