The Winners:
1981 New Era Contest
Each human being is a window on the world, and just as the colored panes in a stained glass window change the quality and color of sunlight, just so the unique shade of each human heart colors a man’s perception of reality.
Every man, woman, and child with the gift of sight looks into the sky and sees a different moon. Two people can stand side by side and see different sunsets. Writing, painting, composing, and photography are windows through which we can see other people’s moons and sunsets. We look through these windows with new eyes and see new worlds.
Windows have never been easy to build, whether they are built with words or paint or colored glass. A stained glass window is more than a few pieces of pretty glass thrown together. Each piece must be carefully cut and arranged in a design and bonded together with lead strips. Poetry is more than a few beautiful thoughts or words thrown together with a pinch of inspiration. The words must be carefully chosen and balanced and polished and then bonded with painstaking craft.
In this issue you will catch glimpses of many worlds through many windows. Although every window is unique, you will notice that they are all illuminated by the clear light of gospel truth. You will see a green missionary coming to grips with his mission on a crowded “chicken bus.” You will see a miracle in a field of dandelions and sit among stacks of autumn pumpkins. Through one window you will see children playing and through another, half open, you will hear music.
We hope you will come back to these windows often. You will see more each time you look. And please, don’t forget to build some windows of your own.
