First Flight
You watch, as gingerly I step
to the edge of the nest,
knowing you’ve done your best
to nourish me,
I am stronger now, and almost ready
to discover the world around our tree.
I’ve watched you in the sky,
soaring to heights that I
could only dream of.
Yet a yearning inside me
knows where I belong,
It’s an age-old song
that my heart sings
as I, too,
discover my wings.
