Come, Follow Me
How do I receive personal revelation?

How do I receive personal revelation?

Prepare Yourself Spiritually

Each of us is entitled to personal revelation to guide our own lives. In order to receive personal revelation, we must prepare by living worthily and studying and pondering the scriptures. If we seek and ask, God will reveal His will to us through the Holy Ghost.

Resources to Help You Prepare

These resources are to help you prepare for the “Learn together” section of the meeting.

Questions to Ponder before You Teach

How do you know when you have received personal revelation? How has learning to recognize personal revelation blessed your life?

Why is it important for the young men to understand how to receive personal revelation? How can personal revelation help Aaronic Priesthood holders fulfill their priesthood duties? How will you help them learn to recognize personal revelation?

What can the young men do to prepare to learn? For example, they could read a talk, watch a video, or study a scripture related to this doctrine.

Teaching in the Savior’s Way

The Savior invited those who followed Him to act in faith and live the truths He taught. He focused on helping His followers live the gospel with all their hearts by providing them with powerful learning experiences. How can you teach the young men to act in faith and live the truths they learn?

Meeting Outline

1. Counsel Together and Share Experiences

Led by a member of the quorum presidency; approximately 5–10 minutes

Lead a discussion about items such as the following:

  • Our quorum: Who is missing today? What visits do we need to make? Who should we invite to an upcoming activity? Who needs our help and prayers?

  • Our duties: What assignments do we need to make? What assignments have we fulfilled? How have we invited others to come unto Christ, and how can we invite others now?

  • Our lives: Remind the quorum of the discussion from the last meeting. What experiences have we had with applying what we learned? What experiences have we had in the past few weeks that strengthened our testimonies of the gospel?

If possible, discuss these items beforehand in a quorum presidency meeting.

2. Learn Together

Led by a leader or teacher or a member of the quorum; approximately 25–35 minutes

After studying the above resources and following the inspiration of the Spirit, you may select one or more of the activities below to help quorum members understand the doctrine.

  • Invite each of the young men to look for times President Nelson sought revelation in his message “Revelation for the Church, Revelation for Our Lives.” Help the young men make a list of reasons they might need revelation. What stories about revelation can you or they share? What phrases from President Nelson’s teachings inspire them to seek revelation? Encourage the young men to record these phrases in their journals or on a piece of paper to display in their homes. What does President Nelson teach us we need to do in order to increase our ability to receive personal revelation?

  • Invite the young men to watch the videos “Face to Face: How can I tell the difference between the Holy Ghost and my emotions?” and “Face to Face: How can I feel the Holy Ghost more often?” What suggestions do President Eyring and Elder Holland give to help us discern between the Spirit’s promptings and our emotions? What do the young men think it means to be “quiet inside,” as described by President Eyring? Invite the young men to share how they could use what they have learned to respond to a friend who has questions similar to those discussed in these videos.

    4:39
    4:13
  • Make four columns on the board with the four points of Elder Ronald A. Rasband’s talk “Let the Holy Spirit Guide” as headings. Review each section together, inviting the young men to write in the columns what Elder Rasband suggests they can do to receive personal revelation. Is there someone in your ward who is a first responder, such as a firefighter or police officer? If so, invite him or her to talk to the quorum about what it means to be a first responder in a medical emergency or natural disaster. How does he or she prepare to respond in these situations? Ask quorum members to discuss what they learn from this discussion about how to be spiritual first responders.

  • Write on the board the scripture references suggested in this outline. Assign each young man to read one of them and identify what it teaches about how the Holy Ghost communicates with us. Have the young men write what they find on the board next to each scripture reference. Invite the young men to share any experiences they have had in which the Holy Ghost has spoken to them in one of these ways. Have they ever sought or received personal revelation to guide them in fulfilling their priesthood duties? You could also share an experience you have had.

  • Make a copy of the chart on pages 96–97 of Preach My Gospel for each young man. Invite the young men to review the chart and its descriptions of how the Holy Ghost communicates with us. Ask them to write about a time when they have experienced any of the feelings, thoughts, or impressions described in the chart. Invite a few young men to share what they wrote with the rest of the quorum. You could also invite the young men to select one of the study activities on pages 100–102 of Preach My Gospel to work on in pairs, in small groups, or individually.

3. Plan to Act

Led by a member of the quorum presidency; approximately 5–10 minutes

  • Ask the young men to discuss any feelings or impressions they had during the meeting. What was meaningful to them? Is there something they can do personally or as a quorum to apply what they have learned?

  • Give the young men a few minutes to record what they will do in the coming weeks to act on their impressions. Invite them to share their ideas.

  • Remind the young men that they will have the opportunity to share their experiences at the beginning of the next meeting.
