What is the purpose of life?

Prepare Yourself Spiritually

During this life we obtain physical bodies and are tested to see if we will obey God’s commandments. We came to earth to prepare to have an eternal family, bless God’s children, and build His kingdom. Our experiences during mortality are meant to help us become more like our Heavenly Father.

Questions to Ponder before You Teach

How have you found joy in this life? What experiences have helped you grow spiritually?

What are the young women doing to become more like Heavenly Father?

What can the young women do to prepare to learn? For example, they could read a talk, watch a video, or study a scripture related to this doctrine.

Teaching in the Savior’s Way

The Savior loved those He taught. He knew who they were and who they could become. He found unique ways for them to grow—ways meant just for them. When they struggled, He did not give up on them but continued to love them and minister to them. What can you do to love and serve the young women as the Savior does?

Meeting Outline

1. Counsel Together and Share Experiences

Led by a member of the class presidency; approximately 5–10 minutes

Lead a discussion about items such as the following:

  • Our class: Who is missing today? What visits do we need to make? Who should we invite to an upcoming activity? Who needs our help and prayers?

  • Our responsibilities: What assignments do we need to make? What assignments have we fulfilled? How have we invited others to come unto Christ, and how can we invite others now?

  • Our lives: Remind the class of the discussion from the last meeting. What experiences have we had with applying what we learned? What experiences have we had in the past few weeks that strengthened our testimonies of the gospel?

If possible, discuss these items beforehand in a class presidency meeting.

2. Learn Together

Led by a leader or teacher or a member of the class; approximately 25–35 minutes

After studying the above resources and following the inspiration of the Spirit, you may select one or more of the activities below to help class members understand the doctrine.

  • Invite a young woman to come prepared to share the story of Bobbie the Wonder Dog and the other examples of animals President Dieter F. Uchtdorf gave in his talk “A Yearning for Home.” When have we felt a yearning for our heavenly home? Give each young woman a different section of the talk and invite the young women to share truths President Uchtdorf taught about how walking the pathway that leads to God makes our lives better and more meaningful. How can understanding these truths affect our daily choices?

  • Invite the young women to read the story about Brigham in Elder Taylor G. Godoy’s message “One More Day” and ponder what they would do if they had only one more day to live. How can Brigham’s perspective help us understand the true purpose of our lives? Invite the young women to pick another story from Elder Godoy’s message and identify how the person in that story had an understanding of the true purpose of life. What would the young women be willing to sacrifice for things of greater eternal value?

  • Invite the young women to find a scripture or scriptures that they would use to help someone who doesn’t know the purpose of life (for example, they could use the scriptures suggested in this outline). Ask them to share what they find with someone else in the class. Encourage them to think of ways they could share their scripture with a friend or family member who may not fully understand the purpose of life.

  • Have any of the young women ever gone kayaking? If so, have one of them come prepared to share the kayaking experience from Elder Claudio D. Zivic’s message “He That Shall Endure unto the End, the Same Shall Be Saved.” Why might refusing to repent of our sins, like a waterlogged kayak, keep us from fulfilling our purpose in life and enduring to the end? Encourage the young women to find Elder Zivic’s formula for enduring to the end, and ask them to write it on the board. How does this formula help us avoid sin and endure to the end? Invite the young women to choose one thing on the list to do better this week.

3. Plan to Act

Led by a member of the class presidency; approximately 5–10 minutes

  • Ask the young women to discuss any feelings or impressions they had during the meeting. What was meaningful to them? Is there something they can do personally or as a class to apply what they have learned?

  • Give the young women a few minutes to record what they will do in the coming weeks to act on their impressions. Invite them to share their ideas.

  • Remind the young women that they will have the opportunity to share their experiences at the beginning of the next meeting.
