How Did Joseph Smith’s Family Influence the Restoration?

Good plants grow from good soil.

We honor the Prophet Joseph Smith as a great man who helped bring about the Restoration. But he didn’t just materialize out of nowhere, already a great man. Like everyone, his character was shaped in part by his family and his upbringing.

His parents, Joseph Sr. and Lucy, believed in God and taught their children to be honest and valiant. They studied the Bible. The Prophet’s older brother Hyrum was a good example to him. All of the Smiths wanted to know God and tried to find Him as best they could. While Joseph Sr. was wary of traditional churches because none of them seemed right, Lucy and three of the Prophet’s siblings joined the Presbyterians. When the gospel was restored, everyone in the family embraced it.
