Have you ever felt like the commandments are limiting, like they’re holding you back?
Well, here’s the truth. Following God’s commandments actually leads to more freedom. It may sound counterintuitive, but hear us out.
Imagine you’re walking along the beach and you see a sign that reads, “Danger! No swimming allowed.” Not being allowed to swim is a restriction, right?
But you still have choices. You are free to walk along the beach, pick up seashells, watch the sunset, or go somewhere else.
You are also free to ignore the sign and swim. But there’s a whirlpool in the water, powerful enough to pull you under. And if that happens, you’ll truly be limited—you can try to escape or call for help, but you may face some serious and debilitating consequences.
God’s commandments are kind of like the sign on the beach. They help us stay safer and happier as we go throughout life, enjoying one wholesome adventure after another.
PS—If you want to explore more about this topic, here’s a great message by former Church leader Sheri Dew. In an international conference about families, she testified that “a virtuous life is an easier, more fulfilling life.” Amen, sister!
