The Guide to the Friend can help you find stories or articles for preparing lessons or talks for church or for family home evening. The Primary theme for April is “I will follow the prophet.”

Family Home Evening Ideas

Look for the FHE symbol on the pages mentioned below.

  1. First play a game of Mom or Dad’s choosing. Next, dance along to music. Then enjoy a snack. Have everyone try to figure out if the three activities have anything in common. To find out, read the poem “I Will Follow the Prophet” (p. 7). When is it important to do the things your parents want you to do? When should you do the things your body wants to do? When should you obey the prophet? Discuss the importance of listening to the prophet and read one of his messages.

  2. Make a copy of page 22 and cut out the temple shapes or write the quotes on strips of paper. Use a black marker to delete some key words. For example: “The temple is closed on the ______ so that people can attend ______ and be with their families on that hallowed day.” Write the missing words in a list where everyone can see them. Hand out the quotes and have everyone guess what words go in the blanks. When the missing words are discovered, talk about each quote. Then draw an outline of a temple. Inside it, write down some things you’ll do to prepare for the temple.

  3. Read “Bullies and Brothers” (pp. 36–38). Have you ever been like a bully to some of your family members? When have you been more like a hero? Decide to be kind to your family. When a family member is kind to you this week, show him or her that you noticed by leaving a red placemat at his or her seat at the dinner table. Cooperate as a family to make a red placemat out of construction paper or regular paper colored with a red crayon that you’ll use throughout the week.
