Sidney Gilbert
(1789–1834)
Sidney Gilbert was born in New Haven, Connecticut. He married Elizabeth Van Benthusen in 1823 and later moved to Kirtland, Ohio. By 1827, he was a partner with Newel K. Whitney in the N. K. Whitney & Co. store at Kirtland. He was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the spring of 1831 and ordained an elder that June. That same month he was appointed an agent for the Church, with the assignment to establish a store and buy land in Missouri (Doctrine and Covenants 53:4; 57:6, 8–9; 64:18; 101:96). He moved to Independence, Missouri, later that year. In April 1832, he was ordained a high priest by Joseph Smith and appointed one of seven high priests to preside over Church affairs in Missouri. He became a member of the United Firm that same month (Doctrine and Covenants 82:11). He subsequently served a mission to the eastern United States. In November 1833, he was arrested and briefly imprisoned in Independence and then was driven with the Saints from Jackson County into Clay County, Missouri. He served as host to members of the Camp of Israel expedition to Missouri in 1834, and he died of cholera in Clay County.
