5 Tips for Personalizing Your Gospel Study

How do you study the gospel? Sometimes we forget that we can individualize our gospel study. If you are looking to enliven your study, the next time you have a spiritual or doctrinal question, try some of these tips to see if they work for you.
1. Get Creative
Make a list, a chart, or a map. Write down words and ideas and then connect them with lines and bubbles to show how they’re related.
2. Write
Record thoughts and impressions from study or prayer in a study journal, even if the impressions aren’t directly related to the topic you’re studying. Review those thoughts often. Jot down your questions in a notebook, on your phone, or on a notepad by your bed to keep you thinking about what you’re learning every day.
3. Research
Search study helps in the scriptures and online. Scripture tools such as the Bible Chronology and the Guide to the Scriptures can help you gain more from your study. LDS.org is a gold mine for helpful resources, including general conference talks, videos, music, magazines, Church history, gospel topics, lesson manuals, and more.
4. Listen and Discuss
Talk to a parent, spouse, trusted leader, or friend. Work it out together. It may take a while, but you’ll both grow in the process. Teach someone else. Take turns sharing what you do know. Discuss what you learned from each other.
5. Act
Reflect on the scripture stories you read. Put yourself in that person’s shoes. What would a similar situation look like in your life? Afterwards, take what you have learned and act on it.
