7 Ways the Gospel Protects Us
From an article in the Liahona and Ensign by Getulio Walter Jagher e Silva
Principles from the Doctrine and Covenants for finding refuge from the storm.
The Lord wants to protect His people. He invites us to gather to the stakes of Zion “for a defense, and for a refuge from the storm” (D&C 115:6; emphasis added).
That doesn’t mean we’ll be spared from the trials of life, but the following seven principles, taught in the Doctrine and Covenants, can help protect us from the adversary and ensure that when difficulties arise “all things shall work together for [our] good” (D&C 90:24):
-
We are protected as we seek the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost can warn us and protect us from deception (see D&C 45:57).
-
We are protected as we follow living prophets. Like watchmen on a tower, prophets can see problems coming and teach us how to overcome these challenges (see D&C 101:54).

-
We are protected as we are faithful in marriage. The Lord teaches us how to protect our marriages: “Thou shalt love thy wife with all thy heart, and shalt cleave unto her and none else” (D&C 42:22).
-
We are protected as we serve a mission. Those who serve “shall be blessed both spiritually and temporally” (D&C 14:11). Faithful missionaries invite the Lord’s forgiveness into their lives and are promised success in bringing others to the gospel (see D&C 31:5).
-
We are protected as we pay tithing. In 1831 the Lord revealed: “Now it is called today until the coming of the Son of Man, and verily it is a day of sacrifice, and a day for the tithing of my people; for he that is tithed shall not be burned at his coming” (D&C 64:23).
-
We are protected as we obey the Word of Wisdom. This revelation was given “in consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days” (D&C 89:4). Those who keep the Lord’s law of health will receive blessings of physical health, knowledge, and spiritual protection.
