Leaders of the Church continued their worldwide ministry over the past six months. Here are some highlights of their many activities since the last general conference.
President Oaks Reflected on Women’s Influence
In a Church video released in September, President Dallin H. Oaks, First Counselor in the First Presidency, talked about the influence of his mother and grandmother in helping him develop a testimony and faith in the Lord. The influence of women in his life continued with his wife, Sister June Oaks, and after her death, with his wife, Sister Kristen Oaks.
“The most important teachers that I’ve had in the area of Church doctrine and service and family responsibilities—ranking right up there with the prophets of the Church—have been women,” said President Oaks.
Elder Uchtdorf Addressed Refugees
Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles went to Poland in April. He presided over a devotional for Ukrainian refugees who have found temporary refuge there.
Of the visit, Elder Uchtdorf, who had been a refugee early in his life, said his heart is filled with “a deep sadness for the suffering” of Latter-day Saints and others in war-torn countries but also with gratitude.
“These individuals and families have strengthened and lifted us with their goodness, trust, and faith in and for the Savior and His divine purposes,” he said. “Harriet and I were hoping to be strengthening and comforting to them, but they brought heavenly light, hope, and comfort to our hearts.”
Elder Bednar Spoke to the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles addressed the National Press Club in May, detailing the what and the why of the Church of Jesus Christ’s global humanitarian, welfare, educational, temple, missionary, and genealogical initiatives.
“The basic purpose of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is to help people learn about the nature and attributes of God, to love God, to become disciples of His Son, Jesus Christ, and to love and serve our brothers and sisters,” Elder Bednar said.
Relief Society and Primary General Presidents Visited South America
President Camille N. Johnson, Relief Society General President, and President Susan H. Porter, Primary General President, met with civic leaders and Church members in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Paraguay during a 10-day ministry and outreach visit.
They met with government organizations that assist women facing vulnerable situations in Paraguay and in Argentina.
“Our Church looks forward to working with you to improve the opportunities for education and self-reliance for women,” said President Johnson.
In addition to governmental outreach, Presidents Johnson and Porter also ministered to Church members. They held meetings for young parents, a devotional for single women, interactive meetings for families with children, and training for congregational leaders.
