Doctrinal Mastery: Assessment 2

Alma –Moroni

During the second half of this course, students studied 12 doctrinal mastery passages from Alma through Moroni. This assessment is designed to assess students’ ability to remember the scripture references and key scripture phrases for these passages, as well as their ability to apply them in real-life situations. It will also assess students’ understanding of the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge.

Administer this doctrinal mastery assessment any time after you have taught all doctrinal mastery passages from Alma 7:11–13 through Moroni 10:4–5. To help prepare students, teach “Doctrinal Mastery: Assessment 2 Review” or provide students with the study guide found at the end of that lesson. It may be necessary to teach some of the doctrinal mastery lessons before they come up in the lesson sequence so the assessment can be administered before the end of the year.

If possible, administer this assessment in person and grade it soon after students have completed it. You could personally grade each assessment and discuss the correct answers afterward as a class, or you could invite each student to grade their own. Because students may share personal information in some of their responses, do not ask students to grade other students’ assessments.

In addition to assessing students’ current knowledge, the experience of taking and discussing the assessment is meant to be a time for meaningful personal reflection for students. While discussing questions 7–12, invite students to express why they chose the answers they did and to explain how the passage(s) they chose could help in the situations described. Help students understand any questions they may have answered incorrectly. Take time to answer any additional questions students may have.

For questions 1–3, write the letter of the corresponding reference in the blank next to each phrase. Please do not use your scriptures for this portion of the assessment.

For questions 7–9, identify one or more doctrinal mastery passages from Alma through Moroni that could help someone in the following situations. Explain why you selected the passage(s) you did.

7. A young woman who is learning about the Church wants to know what she should do to follow Jesus Christ.

8. Your friend does not understand the significance of Jesus Christ and asks you what He has done for us.

9. A young man wants to know how he can receive God’s help and strength to be protected from Satan’s temptations.

Principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge

For questions 10–11, demonstrate your knowledge of and ability to use the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge.

10. How would you explain the following principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge to someone?

    1. Act in faith.

    2. Examine concepts and questions with an eternal perspective.

    3. Seek further understanding through divinely appointed sources.

11. A young woman sometimes feels like God’s commandments are too restrictive. She wonders if she would be happier if she could just live her life in whatever way she feels is best.

    Answer the following questions:

    1. What specific things could this person do to act in faith?

    2. How could seeing this situation with an eternal perspective help her?

    3. Doctrinal mastery passages are examples of divinely appointed sources. What doctrinal mastery passage(s) might be helpful in this situation? How so?

12. Of the 12 doctrinal mastery passages you studied in the second half of the Book of Mormon, what doctrinal mastery passage has been particularly helpful or meaningful to you? Why?

Give students enough time to complete the assessment. After students have finished, review it as a class. You could grade the assessments or have students correct their own work.

10. Students should be able to briefly explain the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge. Consider inviting them to compare their answers with paragraphs 5–12 of the “Acquiring Spiritual Knowledge” section in the Doctrinal Mastery Core Document (2023).

11. Students should be able to explain how this young woman could act in faith and examine concepts and questions with an eternal perspective. They should also identify a doctrinal mastery passage that could help with her concerns. Potential answers include Alma 41:10, Ether 12:6, and Moroni 10:4–5.

12. As long as students answer this question sincerely and completely, they should be given credit. Invite students to discuss the doctrinal mastery passage they chose for question 12 and why they chose it. It may be effective to have as many students share as possible in the remaining time. Invite them to share what the passage they chose teaches them about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

Conclude the assessment with a testimony of the power of knowing the doctrine of Jesus Christ, as found in His scriptures, and being prepared to apply His teachings in real-life situations.
