Lesson 81: Alma 17

Prayerfully consider how the Book of Mormon Videos might help your students identify, understand, feel the truth and importance of, and apply the doctrine and principles taught in the Book of Mormon. Each suggested video is a short segment within an entire episode. Use the start and stop timecode to show each clip within the episode.

“Ammon Serves and Teaches King Lamoni” (1:49)

The sons of Mosiah pray and depart on their missions.

Using This Video

You could show this video segment when you arrive at the part of the lesson that states:

“Invite a student to read Alma 17:9 aloud. Ask the class to follow along, looking for what the sons of Mosiah and their companions prayed for.”

In place of having students read Alma 17:9 aloud as the teacher material suggests, you could display the following question from the teacher material and then show this video segment:

• “What did the sons of Mosiah and their companions pray for?”

After students watch the segment, invite them to discuss their answers to the question. As they discuss, encourage them to mark phrases in Alma 17:9 that help them answer this question. Then proceed with the lesson as outlined in the teacher material.

Ammon becomes a servant of King Lamoni.

Using This Video

You could show this video segment when you arrive at the part of the lesson that states:

“Summarize Alma 17:18–20 by explaining that before these missionaries separated to preach the gospel in different areas, Ammon taught them and blessed them. Then he went to a land called Ishmael. When he entered that land, he was captured and taken before the king. Ask two students to take turns reading aloud from Alma 17:21–25. Invite the class to follow along, looking for the offer Ammon made to the king.”

In place of summarizing Alma 17:18–20 and having students read Alma 17:21–25 aloud as the teacher material suggests, you could display the following questions from the teacher material and then show the video segment:

• “What do you think is significant about Ammon telling the king ‘I will be thy servant’?”

• “Why do you think Ammon offered to serve the king before trying to teach him the gospel?”

After students watch the segment, invite them to discuss their answers to the questions. As they discuss, encourage them to mark in Alma 17:25 phrases that help answer the questions. Then proceed with the lesson as outlined in the teacher material.

Using This Video

You could show this video segment when you arrive at the part of the lesson that states:

“Divide the class into groups of three students each. Write the following scripture references on the board: Alma 17:28–32; Alma 17:33–35; Alma 17:36–39. Ask the students in each group to divide these passages among themselves. Invite students to read their assigned passages silently, looking for answers to the following questions.”

Instead of dividing the passages among the students, you might display the following questions from the teacher material and then show this video segment.

• “What characteristics did Ammon demonstrate?”

• “How might this have helped prepare the people to receive the gospel?”

After students watch the segment, invite them to discuss their answers to the questions. As they discuss, encourage them to mark in Alma 17:28–39 phrases that help them answer the questions. Then proceed with the lesson as outlined in the teacher material.
