Lesson 82: Alma 18

Prayerfully consider how the Book of Mormon Videos might help your students identify, understand, feel the truth and importance of, and apply the doctrine and principles taught in the Book of Mormon. Each suggested video is a short segment within an entire episode. Use the start and stop timecode to show each clip within the episode.

“Ammon Serves and Teaches King Lamoni” (2:12)

Start and Stop Timecode: 8:10–10:22

Using This Video

You could show this video segment when you arrive at the part of the lesson that states:

“To help students understand the context of Alma 18, show the picture Ammon Defends the Flocks of King Lamoni (Gospel Art Book [2009], no.78; see also lds.org/media-library) and ask a student to summarize the account in Alma17 of Ammon defending the king’s flocks.”

Instead of showing the picture suggested and asking a student to summarize the account in Alma 17 of Ammon defending the king’s flocks, consider showing this video segment. After students watch the video segment, ask the following questions as stated in the teacher material:

  • “If you had been in King Lamoni’s position, what thoughts or feelings do you think you might have had about Ammon? Why?”

Then proceed with the lesson as outlined in the teacher material.

“Ammon Serves and Teaches King Lamoni” (3:13)

Ammon teaches King Lamoni the plan of redemption.

Using This Video

You could show this video segment when you arrive at the part of the lesson that states:

“To help students understand the power of Ammon’s teachings and the great change that King Lamoni began to experience, present Alma 18:12–35 as a readers’ theater. Select four students and assign a part to each one. Have one serve as the narrator, and have the other three read the words of Ammon, King Lamoni, and one of the king’s servants. Consider helping students prepare by assigning their parts in advance, perhaps the day before class or just before class begins.”

Instead of presenting Alma 18:12–35 as a readers’ theater as suggested in the teacher material, you could show this video segment. Before showing the segment, you could display the following questions from the teacher material and invite students to consider the answers as they watch:

  • “Why do you think Lamoni was silent before Ammon?”

  • “How did the Spirit of God help Ammon in this situation?”

  • “What words or phrases in these verses indicate that Lamoni was becoming receptive to gospel truths?”

  • “What did Ammon teach Lamoni about God?”

  • “Why was Ammon able to know the king’s thoughts and defend his flocks?”

After students watch the segment, invite them to discuss their answers to the questions. As they discuss, encourage them to mark in Alma 18:12–35 phrases that help them answer the questions.

After showing the video segment, proceed with the lesson as outlined in the teacher material where it states:

“Point out that when Ammon was serving King Lamoni, he was also serving Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ (see Mosiah 2:17). Write the following on the board: As we serve Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ faithfully, …
