“Resources,” Education for Better Work (2014), 38–40 “Resources,” Education for Better Work, 38–40 Resources Choosing a School or Training Program Choose roles and act out the following. KWAME: Well, I think I have a better idea about a couple of good jobs to go after. CONSUELO: Will they help you reach your self-reliance goal? KWAME: I think so. But I still don’t have the skills to qualify for them. MEKALA: Yeah. That’s where I’m at, too. ROBERT: We’ve all got to get some more education or training. CONSUELO: But with all the school choices, how do we know where to go? The costs are all over the place. And how do we know if they are any good? KWAME: A guy in my ward is going to New Age. It’s a technical school. Maybe I’ll just go there. MEKALA: I’ve seen a lot of posters that say the state university is the best around. But I could never get in. ROBERT: And I’ve heard there’s a better chance to get a good job if you do an apprenticeship or internship. CONSUELO: So how do we find out? KWAME: Could we go talk to some people at the schools? Or maybe people who have graduated? MEKALA: That would be difficult. I just get so nervous. ROBERT: But that’s probably what we need to do. We need to talk to them to find out if their students graduate and if they get good jobs. And what about costs and scholarships—all that financial stuff? I think we’ll just have to talk with them. And also with people who have attended that school. CONSUELO: I’ll go with you, Mekala. Let’s do it together. MEKALA: That would be great! KWAME: This is a big decision—our money and our future. Maybe we should pray about it, too. Or get a blessing to guide us. I learned on my mission that we can be guided by the Lord. MEKALA: I believe that, too. Maybe faith is a big part of this. Faith and hope and our efforts. I’m beginning to feel that Heavenly Father wants to bless us in this. ROBERT: And let’s not forget the Preferred Schools and Programs List. It has good ideas about programs and skills to help us qualify for the preferred jobs. Maybe that’s the place to start—whether or not we need a PEF loan. Back to page 29 Notes Create a Note
