Doctrinal Mastery: Luke 24:36–39

“A Spirit Hath Not Flesh and Bones, as Ye See Me Have”

The resurrected Jesus Christ (dressed in white robes) standing at the entrance to the Garden Tomb. Christ is portrayed looking toward the heavens.

In your study of Luke 24:1–9, 36–48, you learned about the Savior’s Resurrection. Using the doctrinal mastery passage Luke 24:36–39, this lesson will help you increase your mastery of the doctrine of resurrection by memorizing the reference and key scripture phrase, explaining the doctrine, and applying principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge in a real-life situation.

Memorize and explain

Recall that after the Savior’s suffering in Gethsemane and death on the cross, His body was taken down and laid in a tomb. Three days later, Jesus Christ was resurrected. Read the doctrinal mastery passage Luke 24:36–39 and underline important words or phrases the Savior taught His disciples after His Resurrection.

Imagine you are asked to respond to the following prompt for the “Questions and Answers” section of the For the Strength of Youth magazine. Consider what you might share in just 2–3 sentences.

  • What is so special about the Resurrection of Jesus Christ?

Writing on a piece of paper with a pen or pencil. 1. Answer the following questions in your study journal:

  • How might you respond to this prompt in two to three sentences?

  • Why does the Savior’s Resurrection matter to you?

To practice memorizing this reference and key scripture phrase, divide a page in your study journal into four sections. Write the reference and one of the phrases (as shown below) in each section. Consider drawing a simple corresponding picture or icon to represent each of the four parts of the scripture reference and key phrase. Practice reciting each of these until you can recite it all without looking. Luke 24:36–39 For a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have

Practice application

Briefly review paragraphs 5–12 in the “Acquiring Spiritual Knowledge” section of the Doctrinal Mastery Core Document (2022). One way to do this might be to see if you can list all three principles from memory. Then, in your study journal, record how you have used, or could use, these principles in your life.

Now practice using the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge and the doctrine taught in Luke 24:36–39 by reading the scenario below and answering the questions that follow.

One of your close friends, Jinyoon, has agreed to take the missionary lessons in your home. Jinyoon and his family recently moved to your town, and he has no previous understanding of or knowledge about Jesus Christ. When taught the plan of salvation and the role of Jesus Christ, Jinyoon seems uncomfortable but doesn’t say anything. Later, after the missionaries leave, he shares with you that he doesn’t believe in the concept of resurrection and life after death.

Writing on a piece of paper with a pen or pencil. 2. Answer the following three questions in your study journal. If you need help applying each of the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge, consider pondering the questions listed under the headings below.

  • What might you do or say to help Jinyoon understand your desire to help him?

  • What questions might you ask to better understand what Jinyoon believes or where he is coming from?

  • How could you use each of the three principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge to help Jinyoon?

Act in faith

  • How might you act in faith in this situation?

  • What might you share with Jinyoon about acting in faith? Why is this an important step in finding answers to his questions?

Examine concepts and questions with an eternal perspective

  • What questions might you ask or eternal truths might you testify of to Jinyoon as you try to help him see his concern with an eternal perspective?

  • How might this help Jinyoon to begin to understand this from an eternal perspective?

  • What has helped you understand the Savior’s Resurrection and its role in the plan of salvation?

Seek further understanding through divinely appointed sources

  • What specific scriptures from Luke 24 might you use when responding to Jinyoon? What additional sources might you review before you respond? (Some of the materials you studied in the previous lesson on Luke 24 could help.)

  • Where else would you refer Jinyoon if he wanted to study more on his own?
