1 Corinthians 1–7

1 Corinthians 1–7

Overview

This week of lessons discusses the first seven chapters of Paul’s letter to the Corinthians. The Saints in Corinth were confused by worldly ideas, and Paul tried to help them see how they could learn lasting spiritual truths. His powerful teachings strengthened and corrected the Saints in Corinth, directing them back to the covenant path. This week also includes a lesson to help you assess what you are learning.

Prepare to Teach

The following information provides teachers with ideas of what may need to be prepared in advance for each lesson.

1 Corinthians 1–4

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students understand how building our lives on the foundation of Jesus Christ can help us overcome worldly challenges.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to ask a family member or friend to explain how building their life on the foundation of Jesus Christ has helped them handle different challenges in life.

  • Materials for students: A piece of paper or study journal

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Using the whiteboard feature, invite a student to draw a picture of a house with a foundation. Then invite the class to write around the house some challenges or negative influences they face. Also invite them to write in or around the foundation what they could do to base their lives on the Savior.

1 Corinthians 2

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students invite the Holy Ghost to help them learn spiritual things.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to prepare answers to the following questions: What are some truths you have come to know through the Holy Ghost? How did the Holy Ghost confirm these truths to you?

  • Video:How Does the Holy Spirit Guide?” (3:25)

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider displaying the text of 1 Corinthians 2:9–14 . Using an annotation tool, invite students to underline or circle words or phrases that convey spiritual truths. Invite them to explain why they marked what they did.

1 Corinthians 6

Lesson purpose: This lesson is intended to help students better understand the importance of their physical bodies and the importance of staying sexually pure.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to ponder what they know about the Lord’s standard of sexual purity and prepare to ask any questions they have about sexual purity.

  • Materials for students: A copy of the For the Strength of Youth booklet for each student, if possible

  • Video:I Choose to Be Pure” (4:20) or “Chastity: What Are the Limits?” (3:59)

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: After students have identified principles from 1 Corinthians 6:18–20, consider displaying a picture of a youth and a temple. Using the chat feature, invite students to list similarities between a physical body and a temple. Also invite them to discuss how this comparison might affect the way we view and treat our bodies.

Doctrinal Mastery: 1 Corinthians 6:19–20

Lesson purpose: This lesson will give students the opportunity to memorize the reference and key scripture phrase for 1 Corinthians 6:19–20, to explain the doctrine, and to apply principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge to a real-life situation.

  • Student preparation: Consider sharing with students the practice scenario in this lesson and inviting them to begin thinking about how they might respond.

  • Materials for students: It may be beneficial to display the scenario so that students can refer to it as they apply the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Divide students into breakout rooms to role-play explaining the law of chastity and why it is important using the teachings in 1 Corinthians 6:19–20. If possible, listen in on various breakout rooms to assess how well students understand this truth. Also, consider using the chat feature to allow students to upload a picture of their image, meme, or collage to represent 1 Corinthians 6:19–20.

Assess Your Learning 8

Lesson purpose: This lesson is intended to help students evaluate the goals they have set and the personal growth they have experienced during their study of the New Testament.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to ponder their progress in their personal spiritual goals. Additionally, invite them to think about what they have learned or goals they have set as they have studied Romans and 1 Corinthians 1–7.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: To help students ponder and practice unity, invite them to select gallery view so they can see everyone in their class. Class members will likely be displayed in a different order for each student. In some tools, this can be changed by dragging and dropping the display windows into the desired order. If possible, invite each student to put their classmates in the same order on their screen. Then attempt to have students recite Romans 14:19 or Romans 15:1, each student saying one word at a time, going in the order on the display screen.
