How Do I Provide for My Immediate Needs after the Incarceration of a Family Member?

Emotional Support for Yourself and Your Family

When a loved one is incarcerated, it is common for family members to experience a sense of emotional overload, lack of control, and inability to deal with the situation. Youth and children also experience these feelings, which can lead to lasting trauma. Seeking help from trusted friends and Church members is a good first step. If feelings of despair persist, seek the help of medical and mental health professionals. If you don’t know where to start, consult with Church leaders and your medical insurance provider about professionals in your area that can provide the support you need. Prayer, scripture study, following the teachings of living prophets, church attendance, and temple attendance will help lift you and fill you with peace during difficult times.

Support Systems

Seek professional legal, financial, medical, or therapeutic support. Most of all, draw near to God. He is aware of your needs and loves you. Pray often and look for the many ways God is answering your prayers. Surround yourself with good people who can help. If or when appropriate, talk with extended family, trusted friends, and trusted members of the Church about your situation. Learn to talk about your experiences in ways that are helpful to you and those you trust. Tell them what you need, and allow them to be of service.

Immediate Legal Needs

Interacting with a criminal justice system can be difficult. There are many laws and procedures that you will need to understand. Consider consulting with your own legal representation when you face significant legal issues. Make sure you understand all the long-term effects of your decisions.

Financial Needs

When a loved one is incarcerated, the financial impact on the family can be significant. Loss of income and court and legal fees can lead to a loss of health care, housing, and savings. It is important to address these issues as soon as possible with a trusted adviser.

Adjusting to a New Normal

Over time, your family will need to get back into a daily routine. Kids need to go to school, interact with friends, and enjoy their life. Even though you miss your loved one who is incarcerated, it’s OK to feel happy. Use this time to develop yourself and prepare for the future.
