Quick-Start Guide

Preparing to Teach

Before You Begin Teaching

  1. Study the introduction to the Seminary Teacher Manual. Familiarize yourself with some of the tools included in the manual, such as the Objective of Seminaries and Institutes of Religion (S&I).

  2. Obtain a pacing guide from your S&I coordinator or program administrator for your local seminary schedule.

  3. Use this pacing guide to identify the next lesson you will teach.

Overview of the Seminary Teacher Manual

This manual is organized into two main sections:

  1. Scripture Course lessons, which correspond to the Come, Follow Me study material for each week.

  2. Life Preparation lessons, which are designed to help students prepare for challenging situations they currently face or may soon face.

Each Come, Follow Me week and Life Preparation category contains an overview page. The overview pages include:

  1. Lesson purposes.

  2. Student preparation ideas.

  3. Materials from the lesson that may require advanced notice to prepare, such as object lesson ideas, suggested handouts, images, and videos.

Basic Agenda for a Seminary Class

A typical seminary class could follow an agenda similar to the following:

  1. Welcome students (2–3 minutes)

  2. Devotional (8–10 minutes)

    1. Hymn

    2. Opening prayer

    3. Spiritual thought by a student from the scriptures or modern prophets

  3. Lesson

  4. Closing prayer
