Skill: Help students identify solutions to their tardiness.
What is my initial understanding or ability? (Assessment)
What can you do to help a student identify their own solution to being tardy?
What is it and why is it important? (Define):
Once a teacher understands why a student is coming late to class, she can invite the student to identify ways to come on time. One way to do this is by asking questions that invite the student to come up with their own solution to come on time. Examples of questions could include the following:
-
Can you think of things that would help you come to class on time?
-
What are two or three things we could do to help you be to class earlier?
If students can’t think of any solutions, it is okay to share a couple of ideas to get students thinking and ask if any of those ideas are helpful. When a student comes up with his or her own solutions, they are more likely to be willing to improve their punctuality.
Who or what provides a good illustration of this? (Model):
While talking with Charlie and finding out he has been late because his dad is sleeping in, Sister Alvarado asks, “Charlie, is there something you might be able to do to be to class on time?”
Charlie responds, “Well I might be able to see if my mom can bring me or talk to my dad about helping me get to class on time.”
How can I practice using this skill or applying this principle? (Practice):
Write down a question to help these students come up with solutions to tardiness in following situations:
-
You find out Katalina is late because she forgets to turn on her alarm at night.
-
You find out Jarom is late because class usually does not get started until ten minutes after the time it is supposed to start.
Ponder or discuss:
Why is it important to help students to identify solutions to their own tardiness?
How and when will I incorporate this?
Think of a situation in your class where a student is late. After identifying why that student is late, ask them a question that helps them identify a solution to come on time.
