The 1983 New Era Contest Winners:
Reflections of Creativity
Almost a year ago we asked you to share your reflections with us in the 1983 New Era Writing, Art, Photography, and Music Contest. And the reflections came, thousands of them, dazzling in their depth, variety, and beauty.
There were poetic reflections of “cygnets flying over silver seas dappled by galaxies”; “tin cans of stale talk”; “the hole in the floor where your bed used to be”; and “smooth blue sheets of glass-blown sea.”
Fiction brought us a reflection of a girl’s painful reconciliation with her father. The article category reflected an elderly Japanese Saint teaching charity to two young missionaries. Through photography we saw a boy and his bicycle in a magic world, and art introduced us to the glory of onions.
In the hymn category the reflection was that of a young person’s love for the Savior, and a winning song admonished us to “Learn Wisdom in Thy Youth.” These are only a few of the myriad reflections of love and wisdom you shared with us.
We, in our turn, will share with all of you as many of these reflections as we can in this issue and, from time to time, through the year. Seeing the world mirrored in your talent, we have seen it new and clear and wonderful. Thank you for the reflections.
