Humble, don’t halt.

06/29/22 | 1 min read
(A thought from 1 Kings 17–19.)

“How long halt ye between two opinions?” That’s what the prophet Elijah asked the Israelites after they refused to repent, even after three years of drought (1 Kings 18:21).

Instead of humbling themselves and turning to the Lord, the children of Israel had started turning to false gods like Baal. But they also hadn’t given up on the Lord completely—they were just kind of straddling the fence, apparently unwilling to commit to anything in particular.

Prophets have encouraged us to choose today to follow the Lord with all our hearts. To “establish our residence in Zion and give up the summer cottage in Babylon.”1 And make sure not to “bury our weapons of rebellion with the handles sticking out.”2 In other words, commit to following Jesus Christ all the way!

Of course, that doesn’t mean we will be perfect. But it does mean that we will be trying—growing in a positive direction instead of stalling out.
