One of the highlights of general conference was President Russell M. Nelson’s unveiling of a new symbol to represent the Church.
Each part of the symbol is intended to remind us of important truths:
- Name of the Church: The size of the text emphasizes the name of Jesus Christ since this is His church and He is central to all that the Church does.
- Cornerstone: The text is positioned inside a rectangle, suggesting that Jesus Christ Himself is the chief cornerstone of our faith (see Ephesians 2:20).
- Living Christ: The Christus is a marble statue by Bertel Thorvaldsen that the Church has often used. It depicts the resurrected Lord reaching out to embrace all who will come unto Him and reminds us that He lives!
- Arch:nullJesus stands under an arch as a reminder of His emergence from the tomb three days after His death. Similar arches can be found on temples stating “Holiness to the Lord”
“We have gone to these extraordinary efforts because when we remove the Lord’s name from the name of His Church, we inadvertently remove Him as the central focus of our worship and our lives.”1
