What’s on Your Mind?

When I set goals, I end up forgetting about them. How do I reach my goals?

—Reaching in Reykjavík

Dear Reaching,

Don’t worry: When it comes to setting and forgetting goals, you are not alone. This is something many people struggle with. We’re all pretty good at making goals. Actually reaching those goals—that’s the tough part. Here are some ideas to help!

With love,

The Friend

  1. Dream big but start small. It’s great to challenge yourself. But remember that small goals are powerful too. “By small and simple things are great things brought to pass” (Alma 37:6).

  2. Get specific. “I will help at home.” This is an OK goal, but it’s a bit unclear. “I will help at home by putting away my things each day.” This is a great goal. It’s specific. It’s a plan.

  3. Share your goal. Talk about your goal with a parent, teacher, or friend. Ask them to support you. Sometimes having someone to check in and cheer you on is just the boost you need.

  4. Make reminders. If you want to remember your goals, write them down. Put a copy of your goals where you will see them every day. Get colorful and creative!

  5. Have faith. “We have to have faith in God,” said President M. Russell Ballard. “We have to have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. And oh, how desperately we have to have faith in ourselves.”* You can do it! God will help.
