“My parents dislike the music I listen to. How can we not fight over it?,” For the Strength of Youth, Oct. 2022.
To the Point
My parents dislike the music I listen to. How can we not fight over it?
When you and your parents disagree about music, it’s important for each of you to stay calm, try to understand one another, and avoid contention. Take some time to really think about why your parents don’t like your music. Review the principles in the For the Strength of Youth booklet, and seriously ask yourself how they apply to your music. Try to show your parents that you’re really listening to them. Don’t immediately argue against them. Then they may be more willing to listen to you.
As you talk with your parents about music, you can talk about the positive feelings music gives you and the ways it helps you in various situations. You can discuss how music can help you feel the Spirit and how you can avoid music that drives the Spirit away.
In the end, of course, you need to remember that they are your parents. Do your best to honor them and avoid contention, even if you feel this is just a matter of personal tastes. If you do, the Lord will bless you.
