How Does Obedience Prepare Us for Eternal Life?

John the Revelator understood the importance of commandments in how they prepare God’s children to inherit all that He has. An angel instructed John that the righteous who follow the commandments of God will inherit a holy city: “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city” (Revelation 22:14). The “holy city” (Revelation 22:19) that Heavenly Father wants to prepare us for is the celestial kingdom.

“And it came to pass that the Lord commanded my father [Lehi], even in a dream, that he should take his family and depart into the wilderness.

“And it came to pass that he was obedient unto the word of the Lord” (1 Nephi 2:2–3).
