“Desideria’s Dream,” Doctrine and Covenants Stories

Desideria’s Dream

Led by the Lord in Mexico

Desideria Yáñez lived in Nopala, Mexico. One night, Desideria dreamed about a small book being made in Mexico City. It was called Voz de amonestación or Voice of Warning. When Desideria woke up, she knew she had to find that book.

But Mexico City was far away, and Desideria was too old to take such a long trip. She felt the Lord wanted her to find that book. So she told her son, José, about the dream. He believed the book was important too. He told his mother he would find it for her.

When José arrived in Mexico City, the streets were busy, loud, and full of people. How could he find the book in such a crowded place?

After a few days, José met a missionary named James Stewart. James said he was working on printing a book called Voz de amonestación.

José was so excited! He told James about his mother’s dream. James explained that missionaries would use Voz de amonestación to teach people about Jesus Christ and a new book of scripture, the Book of Mormon.

Voz de amonestación wasn’t finished yet, and the Book of Mormon hadn’t been translated into Spanish. But James gave José other books and papers to help him and his mother learn about Jesus Christ, the Book of Mormon, and the restored Church.

José hurried home to his mother. They studied the gospel together, and they knew it was true. Desideria asked for missionaries to come baptize her.

Desideria was one of the first women baptized in Mexico. José and his daughter were baptized too.

When Voz de amonestación was finished, José got 10 copies for his mother to share with others in Nopala. Years later, when the Book of Mormon was finally printed in Spanish, Desideria was the first person in Mexico to receive a copy. She knew the Lord had guided her to His restored Church.
