General Conference Leadership Meeting—October 2024

From Generation to Generation

Instruction from President Jeffrey R. Holland

Care for yourself physically, emotionally, and spiritually so you can serve at your best.

  • Get enough sleep, exercise, eat properly.

  • Give loyalty to your employer and devotion to your family.

  • Strengthen your relationship with God by praying with more frequency, intensity, and true yearning. Find the right place and the right time to pray, when you are alert and energetic. Prayer comes with might, mind, and strength from deep within the heart. Consider the “wrestle” of Jacob and Enos as they prayed.

Become proficient in your knowledge of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  • Master the Lord’s revelations. We should take our knowledge of the scriptures far beyond what we learned in seminary or on a mission.

  • We are blessed with a wealth of resources to increase our gospel knowledge. Examples include the Teachings of Presidents of the Church series, the General Handbook: Serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the four volumes of Saints, Preach My Gospel: A Guide to Sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and Come, Follow Me.

Beware of any appearance of impropriety.

  • We must be scrupulously, impeccably honest and upright in everything we do, publicly and privately. “Do what is right; let the consequence follow.”

  • We should not engage in any activity that creates a conflict of interest with our Church responsibilities. We should not use our Church position for personal or family gain.

Be kind, warm, and happy as you support others in their Church service.

  • Remember that the people with whom we serve are volunteers with busy lives. Their service may not be perfect, but it deserves to be appreciated.

  • Leave others reaching higher, but also leave them feeling loved and worthwhile.

Beware of cultivating personal popularity.

  • As Church leaders, we have no personal disciples. What we want people to remember about us is that we have a testimony of the mission, message, and Atonement of Jesus Christ, and that we lived true to it in our personal life and Church calling.
