Skill Practice 1: Introduce the Book of Mormon to People

Skill Practice 1

Introduce the Book of Mormon to People

sisters reading the scriptures

The Lord has given us the Book of Mormon to aid in conversion. This activity can help learners practice sharing a brief introduction to the Book of Mormon with others.

Discussion leader: Strive to be brief in the “Define” and “Demonstrate” sections so learners have plenty of time for practice.

Define

Discussion leader: Introduce the topic for this skill practice by explaining the following:

“The Book of Mormon, combined with the Spirit, is your most powerful tool in conversion” (Preach My Gospel [2023], 113). As a missionary, you will have many opportunities to introduce people to the Book of Mormon.

Imagine you have a friend who asks you, “What is the Book of Mormon?”

  • If you only have a minute or two to respond, what might be some of the most important things for them to understand?

Discussion leader: Consider writing learners’ responses to the previous question on the board. Explain that when introducing people to the Book of Mormon, it can be helpful to focus on what is most important. Simple points we can focus on can be found under the heading “Introducing the Book of Mormon to People” in “Lesson 1—The Message of the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ” (Preach My Gospel, chapter 3, 42). Invite class members to locate this heading. Then share the following instructions:

Read “Introducing the Book of Mormon to People” in the “Teaching Insights” box (Preach My Gospel, 42). Look for helpful points to focus on when introducing people to the Book of Mormon.

Discussion leader: Invite learners to share what they found. If needed, you could update the list you created earlier on the board.

Demonstrate

Discussion leader: Model an example of how to introduce others to the Book of Mormon. You could do this by introducing the Book of Mormon to the class, or you could invite a member of the class to come to the front of the room so you can role-play introducing the book to them.

An alternative option could be to show either “What is the Book of Mormon? A 60-Second Overview” (1:08) or “What is the Book of Mormon about?” (1:53). Both videos are available at ChurchofJesusChrist.org. Class members could look for ideas they could incorporate into their own introductions.

Practice

Discussion leader: Share the following instructions. Give learners time to prepare and practice.

Prepare to introduce the Book of Mormon to someone by doing the following:

  1. Write down key points you might share, including what the Book of Mormon is about and how it has influenced you personally.

  2. With a partner, take about 1–2 minutes each and alternate introducing the Book of Mormon to each other.

Discussion leader: After class members have finished practicing, you could invite them to determine what adjustments they could make to the way they introduced the Book of Mormon. You could then assign them to work with a different partner and invite them to practice again.

Apply

Discussion leader: Share an invitation like the following to help learners apply this skill:

Look for an opportunity to introduce the Book of Mormon to someone in the next day or two. This could be someone who is currently unfamiliar with the book, or you could practice your introduction with a friend or family member.
