Lesson 10: Seek Christlike Attributes

Lesson 10

Seek Christlike Attributes

Preach My Gospel, Chapter 6

fishers of men

“One important way to seek Jesus is to make a diligent effort to learn about Him and become more like Him” (Preach My Gospel: A Guide to Sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ [2023], 124). Seeking to develop the attributes of Jesus Christ can help us share the Savior’s gospel more effectively. With the Savior’s help, we can gradually develop attributes that help us become more like Him.

Review and Follow Up

Discussion leader: Invite learners to think about their recent efforts to apply what they are learning in this class. You could invite them to share some of their efforts with a partner or together as a class.

Suggested Learning Activity

How can I become more like the Savior?

Study

Discussion leader: Display images of the Savior, such as the following ones. Invite learners to share Christlike attributes they see in these images. You could also watch “Christlike Attributes” (2:53; ChurchofJesusChrist.org) to help class members see other examples of the Savior’s attributes.

  • What are some of the Savior’s attributes that you admire most? Why?

Discussion leader: Explain that in this lesson, class members will have an opportunity to learn about the importance of seeking Christlike attributes in missionary work. Invite them to seek guidance from the Holy Ghost to know which attributes the Lord would have them strive to develop in their own lives. Share the following instructions:

Read “Introduction” and “Seek This Jesus” in chapter 6 of Preach My Gospel (pages 123–24). Highlight blessings associated with developing Christlike attributes.

Discussion leader: You might also consider studying Doctrine and Covenants 4 together as described in the “Personal Study” box (Preach My Gospel, 123).

Invite class members to discuss what stood out to them from what they studied. The following questions can be used in this discussion:

  • How can striving to become more like Jesus Christ help you become a better missionary?

  • What role does the Savior play in helping you become more like Him?

Discussion leader: As you discuss the previous question, consider inviting learners to read the sections “Gifts from God” and “A Gradual Process” (Preach My Gospel, 124). Invite them to find words or phrases from these sections that can help them better understand their need to rely on the Savior in developing Christlike attributes.

  • What has helped you make progress toward becoming more like the Savior?

Practice

Discussion leader: This portion of the lesson is intended to help learners determine which of the Savior’s attributes they want to develop. Display the following instructions.

  1. Complete the “Attribute Activity” at the end of chapter 6 of Preach My Gospel (pages 136–38).

  2. Based on your responses, select a Christlike attribute you want to better understand and develop.

  3. Find and study the section on your chosen attribute in chapter 6 of Preach My Gospel.

Discussion leader: After sufficient time, invite class members to share with a partner which attribute they chose to study, along with a brief summary of what they learned.

Set a goal

Discussion leader: Give class members time to reflect on what they have learned and set goals. You could display the following to help them:

Create a plan for how you will seek to develop the Christlike attribute you studied. You could use the suggestions under the heading “A Pattern for Becoming More Christlike” (Preach My Gospel, 134) to help you. Don’t worry if you aren’t perfect in this attribute. Keep striving and the Savior will help you.

My goal
  • I will … (action you will take).

  • I will accomplish my goal by … (a simple plan).

Discussion leader: If learners have a group of peers to share their commitments with throughout the course, give them time to share how they will support or remind each other before the next class.

Next Time

Discussion leader: If you are ready to teach lesson 11 in the next class, consider inviting class members to study chapter 11 of Preach My Gospel in preparation. You may want to send them a reminder.
