Activity Suggestion
- Take the children on a walk outside. Observe the variety of shapes and colors in all that you see around you. Discuss how Heavenly Father designed this beautiful world and Jesus Christ created it. Let the children re-create what they saw on the walk by cutting out shapes from colored paper and pasting them on a poster board.
Please adapt activities as necessary to ensure all individuals are able to participate, belong, and contribute.
Adaptation Ideas
- Invite a member of the ward or community to teach the children an artistic skill such as drawing, coloring, painting, or simple origami. Invite the children to create something using their new skill that they can give to their parents.
- Show the children pictures of various temples, and discuss how each temple has a distinct design. Invite the children to choose a picture of a temple, and help them create a simple model using sugar cubes or popsicle sticks, or they can draw a picture.
- Using sidewalk chalk, help the children draw a simple version of the plan of salvation, a scripture story, or a similar topic. Obtain permission before drawing on church or public areas with the chalk.
- Service idea: Cover a long table with paper and help the children make a mural together, based on a scripture story. When the mural is complete, you could help the children deliver it to someone in the ward or neighborhood.
Discussion
Encourage children to talk about how what they are learning can help them and others grow closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Discussions can take place before, during, or after the activity and should last just a few minutes. You could ask questions like the following:
- Why is it important to learn to use your imagination?
- What can we learn about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ by creating art?
