LDS Scene

President Marion G. Romney, First Counselor in the First Presidency, is convalescing at home following several days’ hospitalization for tests and treatment of problems incident to age.

Brigham Young University awarded degrees to 4,055 students at April 22 Commencement exercises. At the ceremony, Dr. Mortimer J. Adler, noted writer and philosopher, received an honorary doctoral degree, and the Salt Lake Mormon Tabernacle Choir was awarded a Presidential Citation, a newly established BYU award honoring a group or an individual.

Ricks College graduated some 1,500 students on April 21. Commencement speakers were Elder Marvin J. Ashton of the Quorum of the Twelve and Idaho’s Governor John V. Evans.

Marvin L. Pugh of Salt Lake City has been appointed director of the visitors’ centers on Temple Square. Brother Pugh, 70, a retired school administrator, succeeds Philip T. Sonntag, who has been called to serve as a Regional Representative assigned to the Philippines.

Ralph G. Rodgers, Jr., has been appointed general manager of the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie, Hawaii. He succeeds William H. Cravens, who has held the post for nearly eight years. Brother Rodgers has been managing director of Promised Valley Playhouse in Salt Lake City since 1974.

The Southern California Mormon Choir was featured at the prestigious Hollywood Bowl Easter Sunday Service on April 3. The 100-voice choir performed seven major selections at the 5:00 A.M. service, attended by more than 16,000 people at the Bowl and broadcast throughout the world by satellite.
