Guide for Creating Additional Skill Practices

As you think about the needs of those in your class, you may identify a skill that you feel is important but is not addressed in these course materials. This guide provides a template you can use to create additional skill practices for your class.

Key Components for Skill Practices

There are four components of each skill practice outline: (1) define, (2) demonstrate, (3) practice, and (4) apply. The following guidelines can help you incorporate these key components into additional skill practices you create for your class.

Define

Introduce the skill you to your class. To do this, you could:

  • Invite learners to read about the skill as described in Preach My Gospel or Adjusting to Missionary Life.

  • Summarize the skill in your own words.

Be sure to not take too much time on this portion of the skill practice. This will ensure that learners have sufficient time to practice.

Demonstrate

After defining the skill, show learners how to use the skill. To do this, you could:

  • Demonstrate the skill in front of the class.

  • Invite a learner to prepare in advance to demonstrate the skill for the class.

  • Use a video that shows an example of someone demonstrating the skill.

Practice

Give learners time to practice the skill. They could do this with partners or in small groups. If possible, invite them to practice more than once. You could invite them to practice with a different partner or group each time.

Apply

Invite learners to make a plan about how they will practice this skill outside of class. Consider following up in future lessons.
