傑森不像其他孩子那樣喜歡踢足球。

每天的下課時間，傑森都會坐在樹蔭下看書，而大部分的孩子都在踢足球。傑森曾經和他們一起玩過，但是他不太喜歡。他跑得不是很快，也不太會踢球，身邊有一堆小孩在奔跑、喊叫，也讓他覺得不太舒服。

不過，傑森不喜歡孤單和被冷落的感覺。其他的孩子好像玩得很開心！他也想和朋友在一起開心地玩。

有一天的下課時間，原本看著書的傑森抬起頭來，注意到琪拉正坐在野餐桌前看書。然後，他看到馬可對著牆踢著石頭。為什麼他們不和其他人一樣踢足球呢？

第二天，傑森又觀察了一下，琪拉和昨天一樣在野餐桌旁看書，馬可則坐在地上用手指轉著草玩。傑森繼續看自己的書，但卻不時望向琪拉和馬可。也許他們也喜歡安靜的活動。

那天下午，傑森找媽媽說話。「每天下課時間我都在看書，」他說，「其他的孩子都踢足球。」

「這沒什麼不好的，」媽媽笑著說，「我在你這個年紀時也是一樣。一直都在看書。」

傑森也笑了。他很喜歡和媽媽一起看書。

「我以為只有我不喜歡足球，」傑森說，「但是還有另外兩個小孩也不踢足球。」他告訴媽媽琪拉和馬可的事。

「或許你可以當他們的朋友。」媽媽說。

傑森點了點頭。「或許吧。不過我不知道要跟他們一起做什麼。」

「嗯，你和琪拉都喜歡看書。不過看書只能自己一個人做，」媽媽說。「你還喜歡做什麼呢？」

「我喜歡玩西洋跳棋，」傑森說，「而且學校有一個棋盤。」

「喔，」媽媽說，「你可以用棋盤做什麼呢？也許在下課的時候？」她假裝在想這個問題。

傑森笑了出來。「我想我知道了。」

第二天，下課鐘聲一響，傑森便抓起西洋跳棋組。他走到野餐桌前，琪拉正在那裡看書。她抬起頭來看到他舉起了棋盤。「想來場循環賽嗎？」

「也許吧，」她說，「但是我們只有兩個人。」

「等一下，」傑森說。他跑向再度坐在草地上馬可。

「嘿，馬可，」傑森說，「你想玩西洋跳棋嗎？我們可以玩循環賽。」

馬可笑了，說：「我會跟我爸一起玩西洋跳棋，我蠻會玩的。」

「好！」傑森也對著他笑，「我們一起玩吧。」●

這個故事發生在美國。
