Cape Verde is an island country near the coast of West Africa. About 480 thousand people live there.

Language

Portuguese is the official language. The people also speak Cape Verdean Creole, or Kriolu, which is based on Portuguese.

Volcanoes

Cape Verde has 10 islands, which were made from volcanoes. The largest active volcano is called Pico do Fogo. It is 9,281 feet (2,829 m) tall.

Religion

About 80 percent of the people are Catholic. There are also about 16 thousand members of our Church.

Music

Cape Verdeans love music! They usually sing in Creole, and their music mixes styles from Portugal, Brazil, and West Africa.

Story Game

Here’s a game you can play! One person leaves the room. The others tell a story about a man who goes fishing in the sea. While they talk, they pass an item around to each other. The story always ends with the words, “and the little fish died.” Whoever is holding the item when the story ends hides it behind their back. The person who left comes back in and guesses who has the item. If they guess right, the person who had it leaves the room. If they guess wrong, they leave the room again and the story starts over.

Recipe

Cachupa (Cape Verde Stew)

1. Chop 1 onion and 6 garlic cloves. Then cook them in a pan with a little oil.

2. Move the onion and garlic to a large pot. Add 1 can tomatoes, 1 can hominy or corn, and 2 cans red kidney beans.

3. Add 2 pounds (1 kg) meat, like pork, sausage, beef, or fish.

4. Pour in enough water to cover everything in the pot. Cook on low heat for at least two hours.

Note: There are many ways to make cachupa. You can add different types of meat, beans, and vegetables if you want!

Fantastic Fiber

Beans have a lot of fiber, which cleans out bacteria inside you and helps food move more easily through your body. You can also get fiber from whole grains, berries, and nuts.
